2016 Scholar Awards Reception
ARCS/MWC celebrated Scholarship and Innovation at a special evening at the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) on October 20, 2016. Graduate and undergraduate scholars presented their research at poster sessions in the historic NAS Great Hall, eliciting an enthusiastic response by attendees interested in learning more about their research.
Keynote speaker, Dr. Diane Griffin, Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences, and ARCS Corporate Partner Dr. Keoki Jackson, Chief Technology Officer, Lockheed Martin, gave inspirational talks that stressed the importance of U.S. research and new technologies. As noted by the speakers and others, innovation requires a sustained commitment to scientific research, a world-class workforce, and an economic climate that rewards entrepreneurship and innovation. Representatives of MWC's five partner universities spoke and presented awards to the scholars for their outstanding academic and research accomplishments:
Dr. Norberto Grzywacz, Dean, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Georgetown University;
Dr. David Dolling. Dean, School of Engineering and Applied Science, The George Washington University;
Dr. Denis Wirtz, Vice Provost for Research, Theophilus H. Smoot Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Johns Hopkins University;
Dr. Peter Kofinas, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Programs, A. James Clark School of Engineering, Professor, Fischell Department of Bioengineering, University of Maryland; and
Dr. Archie Holmes, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Virginia.
