Several ARCS Friends toured the Washington National Cathedral on Fri, Nov 7. It is a national space of worship. The guided tour highlighted the beautiful architecture, art, and fascinating history on the main and lower levels. We had access to its many chapels and discussions concerning the building process, which took 83 years.
Only one president, Woodrow Wilson, is buried there, along with Helen Keller, her teacher Anne Sullivan, Matthew Shepard, and many others. Many televised state funerals have been held in the cathedral.
The “Space Window” is a favorite. Encasing an actual moon rock from the Sea of Tranquility, it was a gift from Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. It was created to honor the scientists and technicians of our country. After the tour we went up one of the towers for a panoramic view of the area.
We hope you’ll join ARCS Friends for other activities where we can learn new things and grow our relationships with each other.
