Stephanie Fraley, ARCS alumna (having received multiple ARCS awards, most recently in 2010-11) and a PhD recipient from Johns Hopkins University, has been awarded the prestigious Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface. This award, totaling $500,000, will be distributed in equal installments over the next five years. Its purpose is to help transition newly minted PhD's from post-doctoral work into first faculty positions. The goal of Stephanie's research is to develop engineering technologies that can diagnose and guide treatment of sepsis (a leading cause of death worldwide), while simultaneously improve the understanding of how human cells and bacterial cells interact.
In reflecting on this award, Stephanie was kind to acknowledge the support from ARCS - "I owe a huge thanks to ARCS for all of your support early and throughout my career which has helped me to do impactful research and advance my career to this point."
